The Giant Seated Buddha of Dickwella
Located in Dickwella just 15 minutes from Tangalle, Wevurukannala Vihara is a extraordinary temple dating back to the reign of King Rajadhi Rajasinha (1782–1798).
The temple’s centerpiece is a staggering 160-foot (50-meter) seated Buddha statue — one of the largest in all of Sri Lanka.
Tunnel of Retribution & Eight-Story Tower
Tunnel of Retribution: Before reaching the giant statue, visitors walk through a long dark corridor lined with life-sized plaster figures illustrating Buddhist concepts of karmic retribution.
Eight-Story View Tower: Climb inside the hollow interior behind the Buddha statue to admire hundreds of detailed wall paintings before reaching the top viewing platform at ear-level with the statue.
160-Foot Seated Buddha Statue
Climb eight stories inside the statue building to gaze out across tropical palm canopy at ear-height with the Buddha.
