The Sacred Rock Temple of Southern Sri Lanka
Rising dramatically out of dense coconut forests 20 km inland from Tangalle, Mulkirigala Rock Monastery (Mulgirigala) is an archaeological treasure dating back to the 3rd century BC under King Saddhatissa.
Often called "Little Sigiriya", five tiered rock terraces house seven ancient cave temples filled with gigantic reclining Buddha statues, intricate Kandyan-era ceiling murals, and historical palm-leaf manuscripts.
Climbing the 533 Stone Steps
Visitors ascend 533 stone steps carved directly into the hillside, passing through five distinct levels (Lower Enclosure, Royal Enclosure, Great Temple Level, Upper Cave Level, and Summit Stupa).
At the summit, a snow-white Dagoba (stupa) rewards climbers with sweeping 360-degree views across southern Sri Lanka’s lush canopy all the way to the ocean.
